John Carrera
Craft Beer Brewer, Educator & Erie Local
Blending art, chemistry, and community to make beer that’s both deeply personal and technically excellent.
From a Garage Hobby to a Decade-Long Pursuit
John’s love affair with beer didn’t start in a brewery — it started in his garage. In 2012, a friend gifted him a secondhand kettle and a basic homebrew kit. The first batch was a complete disaster — under-carbonated, yeasty, and barely drinkable. But instead of quitting, John was hooked.
“I realized brewing was a mix of art and science. You get to create something alive — and every variable changes the story in your glass.”
That curiosity turned into a decade-long pursuit to master the craft of brewing while staying rooted in Erie’s local flavors and community spirit.

A Fingerprint of Erie in Every Glass
John's brewing philosophy is built around local sourcing and sustainability. He partners with Pennsylvania maltsters, hop growers, and fruit farmers to craft beers that express Erie's terroir — its soil, weather, and character.
He's a familiar face at Erie's craft beer festivals, where he shares his small-batch experiments and discusses brewing science with both hobbyists and pros.
“Every good beer carries a fingerprint of where it's brewed — the water, the weather, the community. That's what makes local beer so special.”

My Brewing Philosophy
John believes that brewing should balance precision and playfulness. He documents every variable — mash temperature, yeast pitch rate, fermentation time — but also allows for creativity and intuition.
“Measure everything, but trust your palate.”
