Editorial Policy

Our commitment to transparency, accuracy, and editorial integrity. This document outlines the principles, processes, and standards that govern all content published on BarCarrera.

Document Summary

This editorial policy applies to all content published on BarCarrera (https://barcarrera.com), including articles, reviews, guides, and all other editorial materials across our content hubs: The Brewery, The Lounge, Table Sports, Arcade, Pool, and Darts. This document serves as our publishing principles declaration per Schema.org's publishingPrinciples property.

Who We Are

BarCarrera is an independent publication dedicated to bar sports, home bar setups, and home brewing. Founded and led by John Carrera, a veteran of 15 years in pub leagues and competitive bar sports, BarCarrera exists to help enthusiasts build the ultimate home game room without wasting money on substandard equipment.

We are not a manufacturer, retailer, or affiliate marketing farm. We are a team of practitioners - people who actually play the games, build the bars, and brew the beer - who happen to also write about them. Every recommendation on this site is backed by hands-on experience, measurable testing, or direct consultation with industry professionals.

Our audience includes home bar builders, competitive dart and pool players, homebrewers, arcade enthusiasts, and anyone who wants to bring the quality of a commercial bar experience into their own space. We serve readers who value substance over clickbait and expertise over algorithmic content generation. See example.

1Our Mission & Editorial Philosophy

BarCarrera's mission is to be the most trusted, technically rigorous resource for anyone building or equipping a home bar, game room, or brewery. We believe our readers deserve content that is:

  • Factually Accurate: Every claim is verified against primary sources, manufacturer specifications, or direct testing. We do not repeat marketing copy as fact.
  • Practitioner-Driven: Our editorial team consists of active players, brewers, and builders. We write from experience, not from press releases.
  • Reader-First: Our content serves the reader's need to make informed decisions - not the need to drive affiliate conversions or ad impressions.
  • Transparent: We disclose our methods, our limitations, our funding sources, and our conflicts. We have nothing to hide.
  • Anti-Fluff: We reject AI-generated filler content, keyword-stuffed listicles, and manufactured urgency. Every word earns its place.

2Editorial Independence

Editorial independence is the cornerstone of BarCarrera's credibility. Our editorial decisions are made solely by our editorial team, led by John Carrera, without influence from advertisers, affiliate partners, manufacturers, or any external commercial entity.

Our Independence Guarantees:

  • No manufacturer, brand, or retailer has editorial control over our content, ratings, or recommendations.
  • No advertiser can influence which products we review, how we review them, or what conclusions we reach.
  • We do not accept payment for positive reviews, favorable coverage, or guaranteed placement.
  • Affiliate relationships do not determine our editorial opinions. A product with higher commission rates receives no preferential treatment.
  • We will publish negative reviews of products from companies that advertise with us or offer affiliate commissions.
  • Sponsored content is clearly labeled as such and is kept entirely separate from independent editorial content.

If any external party attempts to influence our editorial content, we will disclose the attempt to our readers (where legally permissible) and refuse the arrangement. Our reputation depends on reader trust, and we will not compromise it for short-term revenue.

3Content Creation Process

Every piece of content on BarCarrera goes through a rigorous multi-stage creation process designed to ensure accuracy, depth, and genuine utility for our readers.

Stage 1: Topic Selection & Assignment

Topics are selected based on reader needs, gaps in existing coverage, and areas where our team has genuine expertise. John Carrera personally approves all major content assignments. We do not chase trending topics or manufacture content around seasonal keyword spikes.

Stage 2: Research & Primary Investigation

Our writers conduct original research including hands-on product testing, interviews with manufacturers and industry experts, analysis of technical specifications, and consultation of primary scientific or regulatory sources. For brewing content, this includes actual batch testing. For equipment reviews, this includes extended real-world use.

Stage 3: Drafting & Technical Review

Articles are drafted by subject-matter experts who have direct experience with the topic. Technical claims are reviewed by at least one additional team member with relevant expertise. For specialized topics (e.g., food safety in brewing, electrical requirements for arcade cabinets), we consult qualified professionals.

Stage 4: Fact-Checking & Verification

Every factual claim, statistic, measurement, and recommendation is independently verified. See our Fact-Checking Standards section below for detailed methodology.

Stage 5: Editorial Review & Approval

John Carrera, as Chief Editor, reviews all published content for accuracy, tone, compliance with editorial standards, and alignment with our mission. No content is published without final editorial sign-off.

Stage 6: Publication & Post-Publication Monitoring

After publication, articles are monitored for reader feedback, broken links, outdated information, and factual errors. We maintain a schedule for periodic review of evergreen content to ensure continued accuracy.

4Review Methodology

Product reviews are a core part of BarCarrera's content. Our review methodology is designed to give readers actionable, trustworthy guidance.

🎯 Product Testing

We purchase or borrow products for hands-on testing. Testing periods are a minimum of 2 weeks for equipment and 1 full batch cycle for brewing products. We document conditions, measurements, and observations systematically.

📊 Comparative Analysis

Products are tested against direct competitors in the same category using consistent criteria. We measure performance, durability, value, and user experience using standardized evaluation frameworks.

🔬 Technical Specifications

We verify manufacturer claims against independent measurements. For example, pool felt speed is measured with a consistent break shot setup; dart board bounce-out rates are counted over 500+ throws.

💬 User Experience

We supplement our testing with real-world feedback from our community of players, brewers, and builders. We clearly distinguish between our firsthand experience and aggregated user reports.

Brands We Independently Test

We have conducted hands-on testing of products from the following brands (among others). Testing of a brand does not imply endorsement of all their products:

5Fact-Checking Standards

Accuracy is non-negotiable at BarCarrera. Our fact-checking process is designed to catch errors before publication and to quickly correct any that slip through.

Primary Source Verification

All factual claims are traced to primary sources: manufacturer documentation, peer-reviewed research, official regulatory bodies (TTB, FDA, state ABC regulations), or direct measurement. We do not cite other articles as primary sources for factual claims.

Expert Review

Technical content is reviewed by subject-matter experts. Brewing science content is reviewed by experienced homebrewers with BJCP or equivalent credentials. Equipment reviews are reviewed by competitive players in the relevant discipline.

Measurement Documentation

Where we make quantitative claims (speed, durability, accuracy), we document our testing methodology so that readers can understand the conditions under which measurements were taken and assess their relevance to their own situation.

Currency Verification

Prices, availability, product specifications, and regulatory information are verified at the time of publication and at regular intervals thereafter. Articles include publication dates and are updated when material changes occur.

6Sourcing & Citation Standards

BarCarrera is committed to transparent sourcing. Our readers should always be able to verify our claims by following our citations.

  • All factual claims are supported by inline citations linking to primary sources.
  • Manufacturer specifications are cited directly from official product documentation or verified through direct communication with the manufacturer.
  • Scientific claims (particularly in brewing content) reference peer-reviewed studies, established textbooks, or authoritative industry publications.
  • Regulatory and legal information cites the specific statute, regulation, or official guidance document.
  • When we rely on expert opinion, we identify the expert by name, credentials, and relationship to the topic.
  • We clearly distinguish between established facts, expert consensus, emerging research, and individual opinion.
  • We do not use anonymous sources. All information attributed to individuals is on the record.
  • Links to external sources are reviewed periodically to ensure they remain active and accurate.

7Affiliate Disclosure & Advertising Policy

Transparency about our revenue model is essential to maintaining reader trust. BarCarrera participates in affiliate programs and may display advertising, but these relationships never influence our editorial content.

FTC Compliance Notice

In accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR Part 255 (Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising), BarCarrera discloses all material connections between ourselves and product manufacturers, retailers, or service providers.

How Affiliate Links Work on BarCarrera

Some links on BarCarrera are affiliate links, meaning we may earn a small commission if you make a purchase through those links - at no additional cost to you. We participate in affiliate programs including but not limited to the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program and individual manufacturer affiliate programs.

What Affiliate Relationships Do NOT Do

  • • They do not influence which products we choose to review.
  • • They do not influence our ratings, scores, or recommendations.
  • • They do not prevent us from publishing negative reviews.
  • • They do not determine the order in which products appear in our "best of" lists.
  • • They do not influence the depth or tone of our coverage.

Advertising

BarCarrera may display third-party advertisements. Advertising is clearly separated from editorial content. Advertisers have no input into our editorial decisions, and we do not guarantee favorable coverage in exchange for advertising. All sponsored content is clearly labeled with a "Sponsored" or "Partner Content" designation.

8Artificial Intelligence Usage Policy

BarCarrera's tagline is "No AI Fluff" - and we mean it. Our position on AI in content creation is among the most stringent in the industry.

Our Core AI Principles

  • We do not use AI (including ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or any other LLM) to write, draft, or generate article content.
  • We do not use AI to generate product descriptions, buying guides, or recommendation text.
  • We do not use AI to create "content" for the purpose of filling pages or targeting keywords.
  • We may use AI tools for grammar checking, readability analysis, or structural suggestions - similar to how one might use Grammarly.
  • We may use AI for data analysis, spreadsheet calculations, or research organization where the output is not published as content.

Every word published on BarCarrera is written by a human being with direct experience in the subject matter. Our readers can trust that the opinions, recommendations, and observations in our content reflect genuine human expertise and hands-on experience - not algorithmic text generation optimized for search rankings.

If our AI policy changes in the future, we will update this document and clearly disclose any new AI-assisted processes to our readers.

9Corrections Policy

We are human, and errors will occasionally occur. When they do, we are committed to correcting them promptly, transparently, and thoroughly.

How We Handle Errors

  • Factual Errors: Corrected immediately upon discovery. A correction note is added to the article with the date of correction, the nature of the error, and the corrected information.
  • Outdated Information: Updated with current information. The article's "last updated" date is refreshed. For significant changes, a note explaining what changed is added.
  • Broken Links: Repaired or replaced with current, working alternatives. We check links quarterly as part of our content maintenance schedule.
  • Pricing Errors: Corrected immediately. We note that prices may vary and direct readers to current retailer pricing.

Correction Transparency

All corrections are visible to readers. We do not silently edit articles to fix errors without disclosure. Significant corrections include a dated note at the top or bottom of the article explaining what was changed and why. Minor corrections (typos, formatting) are made without notice but are logged in our internal correction tracker.

Reporting Errors

We welcome corrections from our readers. If you believe you've found an error in any BarCarrera content, please contact us at editorial@barcarrera.com. We review all reported errors within 48 hours and will respond with our findings and any corrective actions taken.

10Conflicts of Interest Policy

BarCarrera maintains strict standards for identifying, disclosing, and managing conflicts of interest.

Personal Financial Interests

No member of the editorial team may hold a financial interest (equity, consulting arrangements, or significant affiliate revenue dependence) in any company whose products they review or write about. If a potential conflict arises, the team member recuses themselves from the content.

Personal Relationships

If an editor or writer has a personal relationship with someone at a company being reviewed (family member, close friend, former employer), this is disclosed in the relevant article. In cases where the relationship could reasonably be seen as compromising objectivity, the team member does not cover that company.

Free Products & Samples

We prefer to purchase products for review. When manufacturers provide products for review purposes, this is disclosed in the article. Receipt of a free product does not guarantee coverage, and we maintain our right to publish negative assessments of free products. Products received for review become the property of BarCarrera and are used for ongoing testing or donated.

Competition Participation

John Carrera and other team members actively participate in pub leagues, tournaments, and brewing competitions. We disclose any competitive relationships that could be relevant to our coverage. Our competition participation enhances our expertise and informs our reviews - it does not compromise our objectivity.

11Diversity & Inclusion Commitment

BarCarrera is committed to creating content that serves and respects all members of our community, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, ability, or background.

  • Our content is written to be accessible and welcoming to all enthusiasts, regardless of their background or experience level.
  • We actively seek diverse voices and perspectives for expert contributions and community features.
  • We avoid stereotypes, exclusionary language, and assumptions about who participates in bar sports, home brewing, or game room culture.
  • We cover products and brands from diverse makers and businesses, not just the largest or most established companies.
  • Our editorial team is encouraged to raise concerns about representation or inclusivity in our content without fear of reprisal.
  • We regularly review our content for unconscious bias and update our style guide to reflect evolving best practices in inclusive language.

12Ownership & Funding Information

Transparency about who owns and funds BarCarrera is essential to our credibility.

Ownership Structure

BarCarrera is owned and operated by John Carrera. It is not owned by, affiliated with, or controlled by any parent company, media conglomerate, manufacturer, or private equity firm. John Carrera maintains full editorial control over all content published on the site.

Revenue Sources

BarCarrera generates revenue through the following channels:

  • Affiliate Commissions: We earn commissions from qualifying purchases made through our affiliate links. This is our primary revenue source.
  • Display Advertising: We may display third-party advertisements on the site.
  • Sponsored Content: Occasionally, we may publish clearly labeled sponsored content. Sponsored content is produced in collaboration with the sponsor but maintains our editorial standards.

We do not accept direct payment from manufacturers for product reviews. We do not accept investment from companies whose products we cover.
